STEVE PERRYMAN – A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE WITH A TOTTENHAM LEGEND

A Spurs legend has hit our shores.

With 866 Spurs appearances to his name, former Tottenham captain Steve Perryman is our cherished club’s longest serving player.

A career that started in North London in July 1967, Perryman broke in to Tottenham’s first team at the remarkable age of 17. It wasn’t long until the accolades followed, when Spurs lifted the League Cup in 1971, followed by the UEFA Cup in 1972. He went on to win the European competition twice (again in 1984).

Perhaps the pinnacle of English domestic football at the time, Perryman captained the side to FA Cup victories in 1981 and '82. A huge team achievement, however his individual performance was recognised nationally, winning the 1982 Football Writers Player of the Year.

As a younger Spurs fan (born in the 90's), it is truly inspiring to read of Steve's passion and dedication to the club. 866 caps for Tottenham is a truly admirable feat, one which may be hard to beat.

Even reading his famous quotes shows you the calibre of the Spurs' legend and how much he truly loves the club.

"Even now, when I go over to my mother's house and dig out the old tracksuit tops I wore, it makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck. I like to think I am part of a special family. I am no longer connected to the club on a daily basis, but I'm delighted with every win and sad about every defeat."

I truly wish I was around to see Perryman in his prime. What a consolation that Kiwi Spurs have managed to get him over to little ol' New Zealand to speak. His tales will be a plenty, and I'm sure the stories will be riveting. This is a player that bleeds Tottenham, has played with more Spurs legends than I can count on my fingers, and has the trophies on his CV that will live forever in the minds of the Tottenham faithful.

The hope for the current day is more players can channel the dedication and class Perryman had for the club (Harry Kane - please..)
